Your tour of this historic city begins with the Citadel of Salah al-Din for breathtaking views of Cairo. Salah al-Din built the Citadel in the 12th century to defend Cairo from the armies of the Crusaders and to become the center of his government. Muhammad Ali Pasha restored the walls of the Citadel and built numerous palaces, schools, and government buildings in the 19th century. His masterpiece was the great mosque, which you’ll see next. In the afternoon, visit the Egyptian Museum, an unrivaled warehouse of Pharaonic treasures. The museum exhibits over 120,000 objects, including the remarkable artifacts recovered by archeologist Howard Carter from the tomb of King Tutankhamun. (BB)

Fly to Luxor, cruising the Nile, Dendera

Fly to Luxor in the morning, where you’ll encounter the Temple of Karnak and its avenues of sphinxes and halls of gigantic columns. Later in the day, you’ll board your luxury cruise ship, River Tosca, and set sail for Dendera. (BB, L, D)

In the morning, you’ll encounter the Temple of Hathor in Dendera, one of the best-preserved temples in Egypt, which contains a rare depiction of Cleopatra and her son Caesarion. The cruise returns to Luxor, where you’ll enjoy leisure time before an early evening exploration of the ancient Temple of Luxor. (BB, L, D)

Luxor, cruising the Nile, Kom Ombo

Board your motorcoach and travel to the West Bank of the Nile to see the two gigantic statues known as the Colossi of Memnon. Next, visit the Temple of Hatshepsut and the Valley of the Kings, where many illustrious Pharaohs were buried. Then you’ll return back to the ship, and while sailing to Kom Ombo, enjoy a fun-filled Egyptian dinner and Galabeya party, including typical Egyptian music and activities.(BB, L, D)

Disembark in Luxor and transfer to the airport for your return flight to Cairo. Check into the Cairo Marriott. In the evening, attend the magical Sound and Light Show that illuminates the ancient history of the Pyramids of Giza. (BB) |

Drive out to Memphis to admire the colossal statue of Ramses II and the great Alabaster Sphinx. Nearby at Sakkara, view the Step Pyramid of Zoser I; dating from the 27th century BC, it is the oldest in the world. You’ll then enjoy a guided tour of Giza, where you will see the enigmatic Sphinx and the magnificent Pyramids. (BB) |
